I especially like to ask for backing up both before and after a little lunging session. I have gotten her to back through the in/out gate now and she never tries to rush out. She must be anticipating having to turn around and back out. I don't have tons of confidence in myself as a real horse trainer but so far she is willing to work with what I ask. Someone mentioned bridling a horse and tying their head to the side OVERNIGHT to get them bending properly. Oh my. Makes me want to throw up. Can you spell torture? Bella bends with very slight pressure and I have even got her to come around by just tapping her side. Working poco a poco is much better for both of us. Anyway, she's coming along and I'm crazy about her.

Bella looks great.I believe that slow but sure wins the event in horse training anyway. I've seen lots of horses ruined by pushing them to fast. I've never seen one ruined by taking it slowly.
And I'm with you about tying a horse around overnight. I think it is a useful tool in the right hands but that would never be more than 5 minutes in one direction at a time and never for extended periods of time.
Personally I think an hour is an extended period.
I was just out with Bella, after posting this, and could always spend more time than I've got.
A couple came out with their 4 year old daughter who is a born horse-crazy girl. They have no idea how wonderful and expensive it will be but asked for advice. As always I recommend first and foremost to start with an older, safe horse. Don't look for pretty, look for safe.

When Callie had a troublesome horse who just bossed her around some of the suggestions "TO FIX HIM" made both us sick just at the idea. I think you are right slow and sure and as a bonus you can feel you are doing right by her

Who the hell would do that? Tie a horse around overnite. It sounds like you're making progress!
Bella just a so dang cute. I am so happy you love her so much. I don't know what tying over night would do that teaches the horse...there is no release when they give to the pressure. Some horse folk have crazy ideas.

Bella is a very pretty girl. You know I'm going to tell you to trust your instincts. Tying a horse up overnight is crazy! If you were a horse, would you like someone to do that? It's a great way to teach a young horse not to trust people. When I look at the photos of Bella, what I see is the trust in her eyes. It's so important to never lose that.
